Build Your Own Squirrel Houses: Free, Easy-to-Follow Plans

Squirrels are a delightful addition to any backyard, and providing them with a cozy home is a great way to show your appreciation. Building your own squirrel house is not only a fun and rewarding project but also an economical way to care for these furry creatures. Here are some free and easy-to-follow plans to help you get started.

Materials You'll Need:

  • 1x12-inch pine boards (cut to specified lengths)
  • 1x4-inch pine boards (cut to specified lengths)
  • ½-inch plywood (12x24 inches)
  • ½-inch hardware cloth (12x24 inches)
  • 1¼-inch wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper
  • Exterior paint or stain (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Create the Base and Sides:

Cut two 1x12-inch boards to 24 inches in length. These will form the base of the house. Cut two more 1x12-inch boards to 18 inches in length and two to 23 inches in length. These will form the sides.

2. Assemble the Walls:

Apply wood glue to the ends of the side boards and secure them to the base boards using 1¼-inch wood screws. Make sure to pre-drill pilot holes before driving in the screws.

3. Create the Roof:

Cut two 1x12-inch boards to 21 inches in length. These will form the roof. Place one board on top of the assembled walls and align it with the front edge. Secure it using 1¼-inch wood screws.

4. Install the Back Panel:

Cut a piece of ½-inch plywood to 12x24 inches. This will form the back panel of the house. Attach it to the walls using 1¼-inch wood screws.

5. Create the Entrance Hole:

Locate the center of the front wall and draw a 2-inch diameter circle. Cut out the circle using a jigsaw or hole saw.

6. Install the Hardware Cloth:

Place the hardware cloth over the entrance hole and secure it using 1¼-inch wood screws. This will prevent predators from entering the house.

7. Create the Perching Platform:

Cut two 1x4-inch boards to 6 inches in length. These will form the perching platform. Glue and screw them together to form a "T" shape.

8. Attach the Perching Platform:

Place the perching platform in front of the entrance hole and secure it using 1¼-inch wood screws.

9. Finish the House (Optional):

Sand the exterior of the house to smooth out any rough edges. If desired, you can paint or stain the house to match your backyard décor.

Tips:

  • Choose a location for the squirrel house that is sheltered from the wind and rain.
  • Hang the house at least 10 feet off the ground and away from tree branches.
  • Clean out the house annually to remove any debris or nesting material.
